If you're managing rugged handhelds, tablets, and scanners across a warehouse, plant, or field team, three MDM platforms come up in almost every conversation: 42Gears SureMDM, Zebra DNA Cloud, and SOTI MobiControl. They're not interchangeable, and picking the wrong one creates more administrative work than it saves. This post compares the three side by side: what each platform does, what it costs, and which kind of operation it fits.
This isn't a spec-sheet comparison. The specs are all available on each vendor's site. What's harder to find is a plain-language look at what each platform is actually built for, where they overlap, and where they're genuinely different.

The Quick Answer Before We Get Into It
What's the Short Version of How These Three Platforms Differ?
Single-brand fleets
Zebra DNA Cloud
Zebra DNA Cloud is a cloud MDM built by a hardware maker for its own devices. It manages Zebra mobile computers only, and in exchange it goes deeper on those devices than any third-party tool, with a simpler console and less to configure.
Learn more →Mixed fleets
42Gears SureMDM
42Gears SureMDM is a Unified Endpoint Management platform built for mixed fleets. Rugged handhelds from several manufacturers, iPhones, Windows laptops, Android tablets, even printers and RFID readers all run through one console, with kiosk and lockdown tools included in every plan.
Learn more →Large enterprise
SOTI MobiControl
SOTI MobiControl is an enterprise mobility management platform with long-standing rugged-device partnerships and the deepest policy engine of the three. It's built for large, multi-site deployments where compliance, legacy hardware, and granular policy control are on the table.
Learn more →Fleet composition and operational complexity are the two variables that drive the decision. Everything else follows from there.

Which One Fits Your Operation?
Best fit · Zebra DNA Cloud
When Does Zebra DNA Cloud Make the Most Sense?
DNA Cloud is the right call when every device you manage is a Zebra mobile computer and your goal is the deepest possible integration at the lowest administrative overhead. Because Zebra built the platform for its own hardware, you get capabilities the other two can approach but can't fully match: native LifeGuard OTA for Android security patches, full Mobility Extensions configuration capability, and device diagnostics that go deeper than what any external MDM can pull from the hardware.
DNA Cloud also tends to be the simplest onboarding experience for IT teams that aren't MDM specialists, since the interface is designed for Zebra specifically and doesn't surface capabilities you'll never use. For smaller Zebra fleets where complexity isn't the problem, DNA Cloud often handles everything you need without paying for a third-party platform's broader feature set.
Where it falls short: the moment your fleet includes non-Zebra devices, you need a separate solution for those. That's the signal to look at SureMDM or SOTI.
Best fit · 42Gears SureMDM
When Does SureMDM Make the Most Sense?
SureMDM fits best when your fleet is mixed and you want one console for all of it. If you're running rugged mobile computers alongside iPhones for field supervisors, Windows tablets in the office, and a mix of Android handhelds from multiple manufacturers on the warehouse floor, SureMDM was built for exactly that situation. The cost of managing those devices through separate platforms (separate vendor relationships, separate consoles, separate training) adds up quickly. SureMDM consolidates it.
The bundled SureLock and SureFox tools are a practical advantage for operations that run shared devices or kiosk deployments. Getting kiosk lockdown capability without paying for an additional tool is a real cost difference at scale. SureMDM is also a strong fit for operations with BYOD programs, since work profile separation keeps corporate and personal data apart without requiring IT to manage personal device policies.
The Things Management capability (managing printers, RFID readers, barcode scanners, and IoT sensors alongside mobile devices) matters for operations where the managed device universe goes beyond handhelds. That's uncommon in competing platforms at this price point.
Best fit · SOTI MobiControl
When Does SOTI MobiControl Make the Most Sense?
SOTI is the right choice for larger enterprises with complex policy requirements, compliance obligations, or deployments that include legacy rugged hardware that newer platforms have stopped supporting. If your IT team needs granular device targeting (deploying different policy sets to groups segmented by role, location, OS version, battery state, or device model), SOTI's policy engine handles that level of specificity better than most platforms at similar pricing.
SOTI's rugged-device integrations are among the deepest available, which matters when an operation runs rugged hardware at scale and also needs enterprise features a single-brand tool doesn't offer. Organizations managing multiple sites, hundreds or thousands of devices, and strict compliance requirements tend to find that SOTI's feature depth justifies the higher price point.
SOTI is also worth evaluating if on-premises deployment is a requirement for data residency or security reasons. Both SureMDM and SOTI offer on-premises deployment; DNA Cloud does not.
FAQ
Quick Questions
Can I Use Zebra DNA Cloud Alongside SureMDM or SOTI?
Technically yes, but it creates more complexity than it solves for most operations. Running two MDM platforms on the same device population means two sets of policies to manage, two consoles to monitor, and potential conflicts when both platforms try to configure the same device settings. The more practical approach is choosing one platform and using it consistently. If you're running all Zebra hardware, DNA Cloud is the consolidation point. If you're running mixed hardware, SureMDM or SOTI is the consolidation point, and both support Zebra devices well enough that there's no need to layer DNA Cloud on top.
Does Switching MDM Platforms Require Re-Enrolling Every Device?
Yes, in most cases. MDM migration typically requires unenrolling devices from the current platform and re-enrolling them in the new one, which means touching every device in the fleet either physically or through a remote process if the current platform supports it. For large fleets, this is a real project, not just a software swap. Zero-Touch Enrollment (Android) and similar provisioning methods can simplify the re-enrollment step, but the migration itself still requires planning. Our guide to managing 1,000 mobile computers from one desk walks through what that setup looks like once you're on the other side.
How Much Do SureMDM, DNA Cloud, and SOTI Cost?
All three are priced per device. SureMDM typically runs about $3 to $4 per device per month depending on volume and feature tier, cloud or on-premise. SOTI MobiControl cloud runs about $4 to $5 per device per month, with on-premises slightly lower and enterprise tiers quoted. Zebra DNA Cloud is sold through resellers as 1-year and 5-year licenses with standard support, priced by device count and term. Zebra does include some Mobility DNA tools at no cost with its hardware, but DNA Cloud itself is a paid subscription. Advanced Automation can quote all three side by side for your device count.
