What Are Linerless Labels?
Linerless labels are self-adhesive labels that come without the traditional silicone-coated backing paper (the "liner"). Instead, the adhesive face is protected by a special release coating on the back of the label itself, allowing the roll to unwind cleanly without sticking to itself.

How Linerless Labels Work?
Special Coating on the Roll
The back of each label is coated with a silicone-like release layer, preventing the adhesive on the face from bonding to itself as it winds around the core.
Linerless Platen Roller Required
The printer uses a specially coated (non-stick) platen roller to feed the media without the adhesive gripping the printer mechanism.
Direct Thermal Printing
The print head applies heat to the face of the label, activating the thermal-sensitive coating to produce text, barcodes, or graphics with no ribbon needed.
On-Demand Cut or Tear
The printer's built-in cutter (or manual tear bar) separates the label at the desired length. Apply directly with no liner to peel.

Do linerless labels work with my existing printer?
Most standard label printers are not compatible with linerless media out of the box. A linerless-specific platen roller is required to prevent the adhesive from sticking to the printer's feed mechanism. Some printers support a linerless upgrade kit; others require a dedicated linerless model. Contact us and we'll help you find the right fit.
Are linerless labels available in custom sizes?
Yes. We carry standard stock sizes and can facilitate custom label orders for specific dimensions, adhesive types, and face materials. Reach out to our team for custom label quotes and lead times.
Do linerless labels require a ribbon?
No. Linerless labels are exclusively direct thermal media, meaning the print head activates a heat-sensitive coating on the label face. No ink or ribbon cartridge is needed — further reducing consumable costs.
Will linerless labels stick to freezer or cold-storage surfaces?
Yes — Zebra's 8000D linerless labels use a high-tack permanent acrylic adhesive rated down to -75°F, making them well suited for frozen food, cold-chain logistics, and refrigerated environments.
Is linerless the same as "no-label look" labels?
No — these are different products. "No-label look" labels are very thin, clear labels that appear invisible when applied. Linerless labels simply eliminate the backing liner but are typically white paper direct thermal media.
What is the shelf life of unprinted linerless labels?
Typical shelf life is 1–2 years when stored in proper conditions (cool, dry, away from direct sunlight). Always refer to the manufacturer's spec sheet for the specific media you purchase.
